If You Really Love Some One,..Do This

Set an example for them.

There may be many people important in your life- your loved ones.

You work hard to provide for them, to guide them, to create a secure future for them.

Our financial support can go upto a distance in helping them. Beyond that, they- your spouse, children, and other dependents--are on their own.

Everybody has to live life on their own. Even with enormous financial resources, one needs to know how to manage those resources, steering the shark-infested waters of the greedy world.

There are so many things that your loved ones must know in order to survive and thrive.

It is not humanly possible to instruct and train them-- anticipating all possible situations. Attempting that can antagonize people, as no one likes to be told what to do. Did you like your parents' advice when you were young?

Frustration leads to despair and anger and ruptured relations. But...

There is an easier way to change people

Change yourself.

Easier said than done. How many times many of us have tried to kick a habit!

If it's so hard to change ourselves, why do we try to change others?

An old man on his death bed lamented,"In my youth I tried to change the world, of course in vain. In my middle age I tried to change my family, that too vainly. If I had only tried to change myself all these years, at least one person would have been better."

Children may not listen to your advice, but they never fail to observe what you do,

The world will take care of itself.

Be the change you want to see ---Gandhi

Do Natural Disasters have a Positive Aspect ?

Natural disasters remove man made barriers among people. Disasters affect every one alike--it makes no difference whether one is rich or poor.

In the ongoing Chennai floods, people were stranded in multistory apartments as water had risen above the first floor in some areas.

Everything being sogged wet, there is no food available-no cooking gas, no power. Everybody has to survive on aid.

Below is a picture showing an NGO "Kolapasi" distributing food packets underneath a flyover in flooded Chennai.

For once, all are at the same level-the size of bank accounts, academic and professional qualifications-- do not set people apart here.

What does is our compassion to fellow beings and willingness to help, foregoing own comforts.

In that sense, one could say natural calamities are a reality check. And it can happen anywhere, to anyone.

Unprecedented Floods Hit Chennai

Chennai, the capital of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, has been besieged by the worst floods in its history. Over 200 people are dead. Road, rail, and air networks are disrupted. Even the power and telephone systems are out.

The city is between two rivers --Adayar and Cooum. They overflowed in the torrential rain that lasted several weeks.

The Army and the Airforce are working round the clock, rescuing stranded people, and dropping food packets. More than 50,000 people have been rescued so far- from multistory buildings, treetops etc and carried to secure places. Currently, rubber boats are the only means of transport in most of the city.

Many organisations are contributing physically and financially to the effort. This is a time for all of us to stand united and chip in. Read further here about the rescue efforts:

Manjunath: Why India's Poor Remain Poor

Manjunath, an IIM graduate, courted death while trying to expose the scam in UP's fuel business. A corrupt nexus was using the cheap kerosene meant for the poor to adulterate Diesel and make exorbitant profits.

And the poor? They still have to gather dry twigs for fuel. They can't afford the kerosene which is available only in the black market at thrice the original price.

Watch it to see the chilling face of corruption and the brave young man who refused to be cowed down.

A Beautiful War

This looks nice when you are ensconced in the safety of your living room, coffee and popcorn in hand. But not so nice when you learn the targets of this terminator style war are often innocent children.

Are we priming ourselves for self-extermination with our war games?

A child reared on war movies and games is ready to take on a similar role in life by the time he is an adult. Explosions and sniper strikes are entertainment. I would say the Italian marines' shooting of two unarmed Indian fishermen in high seas grew out of a similarly fostered temperament.

Unfortunately it back fires. It is not always "the enemy" that is the target. These come home to haunt us in the form of school yard killings and mall shoot outs.

It is time for our education to include the oneness of the human race, rather than just patriotic seclusiveness.
