If You Really Love Some One,..Do This

Set an example for them.

There may be many people important in your life- your loved ones.

You work hard to provide for them, to guide them, to create a secure future for them.

Our financial support can go upto a distance in helping them. Beyond that, they- your spouse, children, and other dependents--are on their own.

Everybody has to live life on their own. Even with enormous financial resources, one needs to know how to manage those resources, steering the shark-infested waters of the greedy world.

There are so many things that your loved ones must know in order to survive and thrive.

It is not humanly possible to instruct and train them-- anticipating all possible situations. Attempting that can antagonize people, as no one likes to be told what to do. Did you like your parents' advice when you were young?

Frustration leads to despair and anger and ruptured relations. But...

There is an easier way to change people

Change yourself.

Easier said than done. How many times many of us have tried to kick a habit!

If it's so hard to change ourselves, why do we try to change others?

An old man on his death bed lamented,"In my youth I tried to change the world, of course in vain. In my middle age I tried to change my family, that too vainly. If I had only tried to change myself all these years, at least one person would have been better."

Children may not listen to your advice, but they never fail to observe what you do,

The world will take care of itself.

Be the change you want to see ---Gandhi

Do Natural Disasters have a Positive Aspect ?

Natural disasters remove man made barriers among people. Disasters affect every one alike--it makes no difference whether one is rich or poor.

In the ongoing Chennai floods, people were stranded in multistory apartments as water had risen above the first floor in some areas.

Everything being sogged wet, there is no food available-no cooking gas, no power. Everybody has to survive on aid.

Below is a picture showing an NGO "Kolapasi" distributing food packets underneath a flyover in flooded Chennai.

For once, all are at the same level-the size of bank accounts, academic and professional qualifications-- do not set people apart here.

What does is our compassion to fellow beings and willingness to help, foregoing own comforts.

In that sense, one could say natural calamities are a reality check. And it can happen anywhere, to anyone.

Unprecedented Floods Hit Chennai

Chennai, the capital of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, has been besieged by the worst floods in its history. Over 200 people are dead. Road, rail, and air networks are disrupted. Even the power and telephone systems are out.

The city is between two rivers --Adayar and Cooum. They overflowed in the torrential rain that lasted several weeks.

The Army and the Airforce are working round the clock, rescuing stranded people, and dropping food packets. More than 50,000 people have been rescued so far- from multistory buildings, treetops etc and carried to secure places. Currently, rubber boats are the only means of transport in most of the city.

Many organisations are contributing physically and financially to the effort. This is a time for all of us to stand united and chip in. Read further here about the rescue efforts:

Manjunath: Why India's Poor Remain Poor

Manjunath, an IIM graduate, courted death while trying to expose the scam in UP's fuel business. A corrupt nexus was using the cheap kerosene meant for the poor to adulterate Diesel and make exorbitant profits.

And the poor? They still have to gather dry twigs for fuel. They can't afford the kerosene which is available only in the black market at thrice the original price.

Watch it to see the chilling face of corruption and the brave young man who refused to be cowed down.

A Beautiful War

This looks nice when you are ensconced in the safety of your living room, coffee and popcorn in hand. But not so nice when you learn the targets of this terminator style war are often innocent children.

Are we priming ourselves for self-extermination with our war games?

A child reared on war movies and games is ready to take on a similar role in life by the time he is an adult. Explosions and sniper strikes are entertainment. I would say the Italian marines' shooting of two unarmed Indian fishermen in high seas grew out of a similarly fostered temperament.

Unfortunately it back fires. It is not always "the enemy" that is the target. These come home to haunt us in the form of school yard killings and mall shoot outs.

It is time for our education to include the oneness of the human race, rather than just patriotic seclusiveness.

Discovering a Meaningful Life after San Quentin

This is the video of a man who ended up in the San Quentin prison after a violent life of crime. That's what our movies seem to celebrate. Few films talk about resolving problems sensibly.

What touched me in this video is the convicted man begging God for another chance. Sadly, those of us who give in to violent emotions do not think of the possible consequences.

The man in this video found relief through Christianity. I believe any religion can offer the same freedom.

We Think We Think...Or Do We Really...?

Kamal Ravinath in his viral e-book "Love yourself like your life depended on it" suggests that most of us do not think. We only remember. We project memories and perceptions of our past experiences onto what is here now. In that sense original thinkers are rare.

Weiderholung- The Power of Repitition

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." Bruce Lee (at http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/b/brucelee413509.html#lMIzQL0fk4WwPxPS.99)

One word that I took to heart after my German course at Goethe Insitut was this: Weiderholung (repitition). I wrote a few lines on it and made my first speech in German at the concluding session. The speech was about making anything possible through repitition.

In India, carnatic music students are expected to practise each kirtan (hymn metered in classical style in one or more of hundreds of ragas-specific tunes) atleast a 1000 times before achieving a reasonable degree of proficiency in it.

That is the power of repitition- your proficiency in one skill will win you more successes than being half skilled in many.

How to Rapidly Put an End to Corruption--in Six Months or Less

Introduction

Recent years have unraveled corruption stories from many countries around the world. Corruption at the governmental and judiciary levels is the most harmful; it percolates from there down to the grass roots level.

That many people at the top levels of bureaucracy play with loop holes in the law, is known to everybody. The Devil can quote even the scriptures.

Hopefully somebody in public or private administration who has the authority to bring about changes, can consider the views expressed here. This does not exclude laymen from trying to bring an end to corruption. For all change in society begins with oneself.

What is Corruption
Anybody not doing his duty sincerely is being corrupt. This is a very broad definition. But it attempts to make things simple.

What are the reasons for corruption?
Everybody says that corruption is increasing day by day, indicating a fall in moral standards. This seems to imply that people are suddenly losing their honesty.

I would like to differ. Corruption or its seeds have always existed in society. It was just that there were barriers to its free expression. People were afraid of being corrupt. In these days of information explosion, everybody knows what is going at the top level, so the fear has reduced. Also, its more organised.

Who is impervious to corruption?
Only those who have taken up an individual moral standard can preserve their honesty and resist corruption.

The situation  in the Indian subcontinent

India and Pakistan are among the worst hit by this shameless, spineless epidemic.

In India, recent revelations have increased public awareness of the alarming rate at which corrupt officials at various levels plunder public money.

Let me relate two incidents which illustrate this: In 2010, I needed to remove the bank hypothecation of my car. I approached the RTO (Regional Transport Office) in Wazirpur, Delhi. As I spoke to the concerned official inside, he said, “Aap andar kyon aaye? Ve tho bahar baithe hai”. (Why did you come inside? They (the agents) are outside). Meaning I didn’t need to see him. The agent would deal with everything.

Later I understood why. I had to pay three times the normal charges to get the hypothecation removed. The agent would receive the money, and he would hand over to the officer his dues. I didn’t have time to fight; my home, office, and the RTO were far apart. It was hectic commuting between them. The agent also threatened if I didn’t pay, my papers could get stuck at some officer’s table.

On another occasion, I wanted to have a ration card for ID purposes. I scoured the then (2010) Delhi state government’s website for a contact. Most of the website was outdated. The few phone numbers if you dialed them, nobody would attend.

After a long search, I found out the address of the office concerned and arrived there at around 2 pm. It was inside a residential complex in Timarpur, and without a proper name board, lying invisible from the road.

Inside the compound, there were about ten men playing cricket with a huge racket. At first I thought they were from the residential complex.

I saw the office building nearby, with the counter timings written on it. However, it was closed.

None of the players volunteered to ask me what I wanted. So I approached some senior citizens sitting at the gate.

“They are those responsible,” they said with a frown that hinted at their unhappiness with the situation.

So I stopped a hefty fellow wielding a bat and asked when they would be back inside the office.

“Come tomorrow at 10 am”, was the reply.

“But your office timings are till 5 pm” I tried to reason.

“We have just had lunch and are playing to digest the food. You can have your card tomorrow” came the childish reply, without a wince. He also gave me his number.

By this time a few of his team mates (colleagues) were glaring at me for interrupting the game. I thought it’d be discrete to leave.

Driving the poor into greater poverty

A significant chunk of the population grovels in misery, struggling to make ends meet while the wealth meant for their good is being stashed away in the culprits' illegal bank accounts, splurged on revelry parties, swanky luxury cars, villas, and lecherous pleasure trips.

It is not that the constitution does not have sufficient laws to prevent corruption--it has just become an acceptable, normal practice. You yourself might have had to deal with it at some point. Pollution testing of vehicles, issuing of driving licenses are other areas rife with corruption. They could also explain the high rate of accidents and crime. In the 2012 Dec 16 Delhi gang rape and murder, the accused Ram Singh was able to drive a bus because he was issued a fake driving license.

It is not easy for one person or even a group, to stand up against organized corruption—its tentacles spread across all levels of hierarchy in the system. The media which has been reporting corruption, is itself ensnared in it. You can recall how Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign was effectively defused and silenced. The media played the key role in playing down his message.

Those in power take solace that after all, corruption is not an act of terrorism or violent crime. And they remain silent and complacent, mute spectators (?). Their muteness often leads one to suspect whether they are also complicit. Alas, they do not feel any shame in being accused.

Tragically, the whistle-blowers who report corruption are often targeted and sometimes have to pay with their lives. This confirms the truth of some of the allegations. There is as yet no law to ensure the safety of whistle-blowers. So far, the corrupt can make hay, as the government takes its own sweet time.

Why should we end corruption?

This question is for the corrupt and their beneficiaries.

When I try to cut short a standard procedure or bypass a rule for myself or my associates, I am undermining the system of which I am a part. I gain short term, however, it erodes the credibility of my system. It ends in complete ruin.

Imagine cutting off the tree branch on which you are seated. Or digging a pit under one's own feet.

If I am a teacher and I don't try to teach well, then I cease to be a teacher. The teacher dies.

Transparency- the key to ending corruption

People hesitate to commit offences when they are aware that they are being watched. Generally crimes occur under secrecy and anonymity. Daylight crimes do occur, but they are rare, and are of acute or petty nature.

High level corruption is a chronic disease, festering behind veils of secrecy. When their actions are visible to the whole world, the officials will not dare to commit a crime. The simple reason: Even the worst criminal craves for approval and dignity.

So the solution to ending corruption?
The suggested solution is to make visible to the whole world the proceedings in any public office- ministerial or bureaucratic, starting from the very top, down to the lowest level.

Internet web casting can help in accomplishing this. The current Kerala Chief Minister, Mr.Oommen Chandy, has been web casting his office proceedings, 24 x 7. Webcasts of his office and chamber are available live at www.keralacm.gov.in. Please also see this post.

The cons of using transparent web casting to end corruption
You may ask: but what if the corruption deals are struck outside the office?

Well, in such a case, the minister/ official will have to leave the office for the purpose. At least we will know for how long he attends to his duties in the office, and how punctual he is. He will have to account for the time he was outside the office also. And questions will arise when there is too much 'outage' time.

The main argument against this idea could be the encroachment on the privacy of the individual. But a public servant gives up the claim for privacy when he volunteers to serve the country. Already, many IT companies in India are watching their employees' movements through CCTVs. Who said those higher up in the hierarchy are exempt from such scrutiny?

The second argument against this would be the sizable expense involved in implementing the technology all over the country, in the tens of thousands of public offices. But compared to the size of the recent scams, that would be a mere drop in the ocean. The Coal gate scam alone has cost the exchequer 1, 86,000 Crores of Rupees (338 billion USD).

Let the people decide...or more Arab spring style revolutions are not far off.

But then there will be no time for repair.

Before You Retort...

My domestic help came in on time today morning. He always does. He came as usual, in his brisk way.

But today, there was something not like him about the way he walked. He seemed to have mellowed down a bit. As he rode in on his motorcycle, it seemed he had been deeply preoccupied or concerned about some problem.

As soon as he got down, he took out his phone and started dialling. This was unusual, for he always greets me when we meet at the gate.

Actually, it turned out he had an argument with his wife that morning.

It had been over a cup of tea. She had served him tea late, as he was getting on to his bike.

In a fury, he told her to drink it herself, turned and rode away. As he sped away, he stole a glance at her in his rear view mirror. She was standing there, still like a tree, cup in hand, looking after him.

Suddenly remorse struck him like a tennis ball. He imagined of all the chores she performed at home, for him and for the children. He remembered how she had looked after him when he had been ill, how she waited for him to return at night to have food.

He looked in the mirror again. She was still standing there, cup in hand, even though he couldn't make out her face.

Her stunned, sad figure made him feel bad, really bad. He wanted to stop, turn around, go up to her, and hug her, tell her not to worry.

But there was no time. He had to be on the highway before the mad rush of the machine monsters began. He felt his feelings were being crushed under the giant wheels of the 18 wheeler truck rolling in front of him.

He resolved to buy her a sari in the evening.

Before that, he needed to make a phone call...

How to Land a Plane in Fog

The Challenge

Have you been in a plane that was attempting to land in fog or rain? How nerve racking it is as the aircraft makes each attempt to land, but the pilot is unable to see the runway far enough.

Recently, a friend of mine flew with his family from Imphal (Manipur) to Delhi. Both cities are in India. They were returning from a winter vacation. As you know, winter makes Delhi very foggy and this is not good for landing aircraft. It reduces the visibility to near zero.

When their plane reached Delhi airport, the visibility was 10 metres, not enough to land. They circled the for about an hour, but the fog did not lift. Air traffic control directed them to Jaipur airport, about 45 mins away. It was having a visibility of 300 m.

Unfortunately when the plane reached Jaipur, the visibility there fell---to 10 metres. But the pilot had no option but to land, because fuel was running low. Somehow, they landed, half on the runway and half on the grassy fields. The violent jolt set off the alarm. Oxygen masks came flying down---but only two of them were released---This was a prominent national carrier.

They had a narrow escape.

This set me thinking on an idea for safe landing of airplanes-at reduced costs and especially in poor visibility conditions.

This might sound crazy, but do bear with me. If viable, it could save human lives, time, and precious fuel..

The solution: Use a balloon

We need to go back to the days of balloons and zeppelins. Zeppelins are huge airships that were used before propeller aircraft. They were essentially huge balloons with a metal framework.

Feasibility study

A modern day jet aircraft such as the Boeing 747 is 76 m long and weighs about 100 tonnes. According to the law of buoyancy, we need a balloon that can displace air equal to this weight. Density of air at sea level is 1.225 kg/m3.  So we need an air-filled balloon of volume approximately 81650 cubic metres to carry the weight of the plane, without using the engine.

Conceive a cylindrical balloon of length 76 m and diameter 36 m, attached to the top of the plane. This will be about six times taller (thicker) than the plane (The cabin diameter of a 747 is 6.3 m.). This will be larger than the current largest hot air balloon, the George White Superbike balloon.

Research can find ways to reduce this size.

Deploying the balloon

When the pilot is circling the airport, his speed will be around 380 kmph. As he is ready to land, he inflates the balloon. This should not be difficult as we can redirect the jet exhaust to fill the balloon. The required volume will be more, because density of jet exhaust is only 0.5 kg/m3.

The fully inflated balloon will further reduce the speed of the plane. When the plane is suspended on the balloon, the pilot can guide it to the runway at a very low speed (perhaps less than 60 kmph- he doesn't need to stay afloat using speed).

Eventually, when he is directly above the runway, it is just a matter of touching down vertically, by releasing the air in a controlled manner.

Experiments will have to be done with 747 sized drones to check for any complications involved with huge sized balloons.

The benefits

  • Save tonnes of air fuel in circling over airports awaiting the landing signal.
  • Reduce the length of the runway.
  • Land aircraft safely on runways with a vicious reputation, such as on mountains etc.

The cons

This makes planes more vulnerable to sabotage. The surveillance systems for the airport and vicinity will need to be fool proof.

What has this got to do with personal development? Perhaps nothing. However, solving humanity's problems is part of the challenges we must meet to develop our potential.

I would invite your feedback on this.

Letting Go ...

This video is from the movie "Peaceful Warrior" based on Dan Millman's best selling semi-autobiographical book.

It tries to demonstrate the concept of letting go of the sense of separation.

This is a real life story based on an American gymnast.

Surviving Depression

Two frogs fell into a pot of buttermilk.

One of them despaired, "Oh! We will never be able to get out! The pot is too deep! We are done for!" He gave up all effort, and simply sank down and died.

The other frog thought, "At least I will keep trying. Maybe a way will open up. I might get an opportunity or stroke of luck. I better be prepared."

And so it swam, round and round in circles. It swam till it couldn't move its legs. Slowly the aching legs became still, its eyes closed in exhaustion, and it started sinking.

What was this? It feet went down some, and struck something solid. There they rested.

Opening weary, disbelieving eyes, the frog looked down at the lump of butter on which it was resting.

Its ceaseless struggling had churned the buttermilk into butter!

Muttering a prayer of thanks, the frog mustered its energy, and leaped off from the mass of butter to freedom.

We need to keep making every possible effort, even when the odds stand heavily against us. We need to keep thinking positive. In moments of crisis, our positive thinking habits will lift us out of gloom.

The Dilemma of Choosing: Prosperity or Peace?

Have you tried the LOA, affirmations, or the Secret to manifest your desires?

I have been a fan of manifesting, LOA and all similar theories. I had some results with writing affirmations the Scott Adams style.

Recently I recalled something that I had read long ago that stated in effect, that chanting can accomplish anything you want. Yes, literally anything.

I did not want to take chant as a short cut to success. It could be a supplement to hard work and I was prepared to work hard.

Wanting to try out this, I looked around for something to chant and came upon Krishna Das's chants. They are very musical, and thus easy to chant for longer duration. This was the reason I went for them.

I found it on Youtube and sang along.

Soon I found myself losing myself in the magnetic rhythm of the chant. I forgot all about why I had started chanting in the first place.

Then I remembered. I needed to manifest my goals.

It was a dilemma. What to choose: the happiness of seeing my desires fulfilled or just forgetting myself in the ineffable bliss of the chant?

I am still looking for the answer. My goals are yet to manifest.

Perhaps it need not be Prosperity or  Peace. It could be Prosperity and Peace.

Here is a sample of the chant I tried. (Note: You are under no obligation to listen to it. I am not propagating anything here.)

Why Writers Should Write Stream of Consciousness Everyday

Writing well involves being able to transfer your remarkable thoughts on to the keyboard. Everybody has great thoughts- great novel plots, seeds of e-books,  blog posts and articles coursing through their minds.

Then why doesn’t everybody write a smashing good blog post? Or having written one, why do bloggers trail off into long periods of no writing? Some reasons:

Good writing is the result of deep thinking. It can happen automatically. You may be ruminating on a topic while at your chores. Then voila! Out of the blue a remarkable thought strikes like lightning.

But…

This is where writers are born… or allow themselves to wilt away…

Most people watch that innovative thought for some time, tell themselves they will note it down, and then let it fade away from memory.

However, if you have been writing SOC everyday for 5-15 minutes, you would have been habituated to the process of writing. The act of writing does not scare you anymore. So as soon as a great thought strikes, you will put it down on paper. It also happens that, if you have a habit of daily soc writing, when you sit down to write, you can have great thoughts.

Why don’t we continue to write every day?

If you have tried SOC writing for an extended period, you will have found that many of the days, the writing isn’t anything special. It can be drab, taboo, incoherent babbling. Sometimes it may be devoid of any meaning at all.

Most people get discouraged at this point.

However, we do need to feed great thoughts into our minds along with the SOC writing exercise, and also we need to aim at a goal. Reading good thinkers is an excellent way to raise the quality of thoughts. Slowly, our thoughts will acquire more clarity, until we feel comfortable presenting them to the world.

Nihilism, Life, and a Cure for Boredom

Today, I came upon a blogger who seemed to revel in negating life. Yes he was a nihilist, and nihilism, is intrinsically pessimistic.

I agree that life situations are (sometimes) boring. We have to sit in on rainy, gloomy or wintry days, without sunshine, perhaps for weeks at a time.

But isn't the very prospect of sunshine at the end of those days hope-inspiring?

If we were always 'high', if life were one continuous flow of high voltage experiences, how long could we endure it?

Boredom is just one of the wide (infinite?) gamut of mental states the human being experiences. Isn't the never ending thirst for stimulation or excitement, the root of the problem?

But that is what all of mankind does.

Isn't that what we all do, when we scamper to the countryside for a weekend getaway, or throng the dance bars to party the night away?

Nobody really knows what they are searching for, and try to fill up each moment with another (hopefully) 'enjoyable' activity.

That pit never gets filled up. It is like a black hole that sucks in every thing you have.

We get exhausted.

Is there an alternative?

Yes and no.

You are the alternative.

Listen to what is going on inside you.

     Your actions.

        Your body sensations.

             Your breath.

                 Your thoughts.

In that order of ease.

Actions are the easiest to keep your awareness on. Thoughts change fast and it will take time before we can learn to keep track of them.

If you keep paying attention to these, I can guarantee you will never be bored again.

Watch, and let go. Watch, and let go.

Your life will be a never ending journey of discovering newer and newer knowledge.

15 Sure-fire Techniques to Rise Early

Rising early has a lot of benefits. Besides giving a head start to the day, it lets you enjoy the cool fresh morning air, do exercise/meditation without disturbance, work on your pet projects, spend time with your spouse, reflect on life goals…

Many people find it difficult to rise early. They feel they have not had enough sleep. Part of the reason is that they were not relaxed at the time of sleeping and this condition prevailed throughout the night.

The following tips let you jump out of bed early in the morning, as soon as the alarm goes off:
  1. Associate with people who are early risers
  2. Schedule an activity that you enjoy, so that you do it as soon as you wake up:
    • having tea/coffee, reading a book, jogging in the fresh air, writing,...
  3. Have a clear vision of your life goal/goals
  4. Have a specific list of tasks to do for the day
  5. Roll off the bed as soon as the alarm rings
  6. Have a preset routine to follow as soon as you get up:
    • Wake up 5 am, brush teeth 5:05, bathe 5:15 …
    • Use trial and error to adjust this routine
    • If you are not able to keep it, fine. Remember Emily Coue’s affirmation: Day by day...
  7. Use a daily diary to mark the times when you went to bed and got up
  8. No matter how many times you fail, be patient with yourself. In times of desperation, say to yourself: “Day by day, in every way, I’m getting better and better”*
  9. Fix a time for going to bed so you get sufficient sleep.
  10. Sleep requirements vary. Find out how much sleep you require to be fully refreshed. A heavy stomach can increase sleep requirement.
  11. Avoid stimulating movies, books, discussions etc. before going to bed. These agitate the mind.
  12. Before going to bed, soothe your mind by playing calming music or meditating.
  13. Before lying down, sitting down and counting breaths from 10 to 1 is an excellent exercise to let go of the day’s frustrations, and to come into this moment. It goes like this: as a breath comes in, say inside: 10 in. As it goes out, say: 10 out. Continue till you reach 1. 10 in, 10 out; 9 in, 9 out; 8 in, 8 out; 7 in, 7 out;…………….1 in, 1 out.
  14. As you lie down to sleep, repeat an affirmation to yourself. It can be a better health affirmation: “I am getting healthier/I am healthy.” It can be for wealth “I am getting wealthier/I am wealthy” or any other goal.
  15. When you are feeling too uninspired or depressed to get up, do not beat yourself up. Relax under the covers, and say “Day by day, in every way, I’m getting better and better” and “I love myself. I accept myself. I approve of myself as I am now.”
*Note: This affirmation is from Dr. Emily Coue, the 18th century French physician. He gave these affirmations to his patients to repeat. The healing rate increased dramatically.
